SUMMARY:What’s the Status of Raise the Age and Is It What Reformers Intended?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 6th\n9:00 AM – 12:00 pm\n55 West 13th Street\, Room I 205 \nNew York’s Raise the Age law went into effect on October 1. The law ended the State’s practice of automatically treating people as young as 16 as adults in the criminal justice system. It also required the City to move all 16- and 17-year-olds out of the Rikers Island jail. Advocates who fought for Raise the Age believed it would lead to a more humane system. But now\, many fear that the brutal conditions of Rikers are being recreated in the facilities where young people are being held. Join representatives of the City\, credible messenger service providers\, and advocates to discuss the status of early implementation\, challenges\, and opportunities for restorative justice and support for young people. \nSpeakers include: \n\nAntoinette Kennedy\, Man Up Inc.Kate Rubin\, Youth Represent\nCincere Wilson\, Institute for Transformative Mentoring at the Center for New York City Affairs\nDana Kaplan\, Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice\nFelipe Franco\, Administration for Children’s Services\nShanduke McPhatter\, Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes Inc.\nMarcus Campbell\, Raise the Age Implementation Board

SUMMARY:Mental Health Trialogue: Trauma & Psychopharmacology
DESCRIPTION:Are you a family member of someone taking psych meds\, a prescriber of psych meds\, or are you\, yourself\, taking psychotropic medication? \nAre you interested in hearing real perspectives on people’s experiences with psych meds? \nAre you concerned about multiple side effects\, the stigma around taking meds\, access to services\, navigating the system\, or the challenges around coming off/starting psychotropic medication? \n*** \nDespite shifts towards inclusiveness and partnership in mental health services development\, meaningful open communication between professionals\, service users and families within the mental health system remains a challenge. \nThis Mental Health Trialogue (MHT) is a monthly forum that brings together personal perspectives from providers\, peers/survivors\, family members and other interested parties to discuss issues and experiences with psychotropic medication\, among other subjects. The goal of the forum is to foster rich discussion and to change the perception that only those who work in the field of mental health are the experts in mental health. This month’s Trialogue will focus on the intersection of trauma and psychopharmacology. \nMHT’s combination of expertise and experience provides a unique wealth of collective knowledge to which individuals or people from different perspectives would not otherwise be exposed. \nTrialogue meetings are open to current or former mental health service users\, families and friends\, professional mental health workers\, prescribers\, as well as all community members with an interest in mental health. All are encouraged to attend! \n*** \nHow it works: Facilitators will open the forum by explaining the purpose of MHT\, then initiate a discussion about that month’s topic. We will then open the conversation to all in attendance to share their responses if desired and foster community. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nMHT provides a supportive\, non-judgemental space to share unique stories\, find solidarity and discover new complementary perspectives that offer clarity\, insight\, and supportive community. \nPLEASE NOTE: MHT is not a support group\, a source of medical/psychiatric advice\, or a therapy session. \nDonations are graciously accepted to help us continue to widely offer community mental health programming!

SUMMARY:Unspoken Words: A Discussion on Mental Health and Identity
DESCRIPTION:Unspoken Words: A Discussion About Mental Health and Identity is a day-long summit for young adults from NYC between the ages of 15 and 24. The summit will include presentations by youth leaders and renowned educators\, engaging conversations about mental health and social justice more generally\, and more specific sessions focusing on the intersection of mental health and individual identity. We will look at how our individual identities impact our mental wellness\, and we will together develop meaningful recommendations for how NYC can better address the health needs of young people. \nThroughout the day\, participants will have an opportunity to join different breakout sessions. The morning breakout sessions will cover the ways in which specific identities (race\, immigration status\, disability and sexual & gender identity) affect mental wellness. In the afternoon\, sessions will focus on societal factors that also impact our well-being\, including code-switching\, relationships between civilians and authority figures\, socio-economic status and family composition\, and culture and religious identity.
